A famous Russian archeologist Professor S.J Rudenko in 1949 discovered a piece of rug from the Altai Mountains of Siberia. This rug was pile-knot and it may weave at least five centuries BC. Professor S.J Rudenko himself believe that this rug was manufacture in the North West place of Iran. During the period of Sassanian dynasty (224-641 AD), the carpet weaving reached at its top. Designs of stars, birds, flowers etc has introduced in the carpet during this period.

On the basis of color, wool, knots, the size, the thickness, the quantity of pood, the numbers of knots, Iranian carpets can classifies into two groups-tribal carpet and rural or urban carpets. Tribal carpets are small in size thick, woven in natural, sharp and in bright colours. They are using geometrical designs and hereditary emblems as the design. The majority of Iranian rugs are manufacture from rural and urban centers. Rural carpets are big in size and manufactured bulky by skilled artisans. Sheep wool is the major raw material of any carpet. They are also using wools from Camels and goat. Iranian wool is more thick and strong than any other synthetic fibers. Original cotton and silk are also use for making carpets.
